Start your journey with a guided Kigali City Tour (included), where you’ll explore the city’s rich history spanning over a century. Founded as a German settlement in 1907, Kigali became Rwanda’s capital in 1962, replacing Butare during the country’s transition to independence.
Visit Old Kigali, local craft centers, and the Kigali Genocide Memorial to explore Rwanda’s history—from its pre-colonial roots through the tragic events of the 1994 genocide. Enjoy lunch in Kigali before setting off on a scenic 2.5-hour drive to Ruhengeri, the gateway to gorilla trekking in Parc National des Volcans. This charming town of about 70,000 residents lies just 25 kilometers from the Ugandan border and is renowned for its warm hospitality and breathtaking views of the surrounding volcanoes. Once a Belgian colonial settlement, Ruhengeri today is a vibrant blend of French and English-speaking communities, adding to its rich cultural character.

Breakfast at the lodge. 07:00 hrs: Registration begins, where park staff assign you to a specific gorilla group based on your fitness level and the trekking conditions. You will be informed about the estimated trekking times and the location of each gorilla group from the previous evening. Each day, a total of 96 gorilla permits are issued, with a maximum of eight trekkers allowed per group.
Once trekking groups are assigned, the Lead Guide will give a detailed briefing covering trekking procedures, safety guidelines, and respectful behavior during your gorilla encounter. After the briefing, you will drive to the designated trailhead to begin your trek up the mountain.
The trek, which can last anywhere from two to six or more hours depending on the gorillas' movements, offers ample opportunities to rest and capture stunning photographs along the journey as guided by experienced rangers.
After this unforgettable experience, return to your lodge for a well-deserved lunch. Spend the afternoon at your leisure or choose to enrich your adventure with optional activities, such as visiting the tranquil Twin Lakes of Ruhondo and Burera, or immersing yourself in Rwanda’s vibrant culture and heritage at the Iby’iwacu Cultural Village (optional; additional cost).
